What is the Lipid Profile Test?
A Lipid Profile is a blood test that measures cholesterol and triglycerides — the fats in your blood. High levels can silently build up in arteries and lead to heart attack and stroke.
Heart disease affects Indians at a younger age than many other populations, so a lipid profile is recommended for every adult, at least once every few years — and yearly if you have diabetes, high BP or a family history of heart disease.
What it measures: Total cholesterol, HDL ("good") cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol, VLDL, triglycerides and risk ratios.
Parameters included (7)
- Total Cholesterol
- HDL Cholesterol
- LDL Cholesterol
- VLDL Cholesterol
- Triglycerides
- Total Cholesterol/HDL Ratio
- LDL/HDL Ratio
Why is this test done?
- Assessing the risk of heart attack and stroke
- Monitoring cholesterol-lowering medicines (statins)
- Screening people with diabetes, high BP, obesity or smoking habit
- Part of yearly full body checkups
When should you get tested?
- Usually no symptoms — high cholesterol is silent
- Family history of heart attack at a young age
- Diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity or smoking
- Yellowish deposits around the eyes (xanthelasma)
How to prepare for the Lipid Profile Test
- 1Fast for 10–12 hours before the test (plain water is allowed).
- 2Avoid alcohol and fatty food the evening before.
- 3Continue cholesterol medicines unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Lipid Profile Test normal range
| Parameter | Typical reference range |
|---|---|
| Total cholesterol | Below 200 mg/dL (desirable) |
| LDL cholesterol | Below 100 mg/dL (optimal) |
| HDL cholesterol | Men: 40 mg/dL or above · Women: 50 mg/dL or above |
| Triglycerides | Below 150 mg/dL |
| VLDL cholesterol | 5–40 mg/dL |
| Total cholesterol / HDL ratio | Below 5 (ideal below 3.5) |
Ranges are typical adult values and vary between labs, age and sex. Always use the range printed on your report and discuss results with your doctor.
Understanding your results
- LDL is the main target of treatment — the lower the better, especially if you have diabetes or heart disease.
- Higher HDL is protective. Exercise, quitting smoking and healthy fats help raise it.
- High triglycerides are often linked to excess carbohydrates, sugar and alcohol.
