What is the BUN Test?

The Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) test measures the amount of nitrogen in your blood that comes from urea, a waste product formed when the liver breaks down protein. Healthy kidneys remove urea from the blood.

BUN is usually checked together with creatinine. The two values — and the ratio between them — help doctors tell apart kidney problems from dehydration and other causes.

What it measures: Urea nitrogen in the blood, reflecting kidney filtration, hydration and protein breakdown.

BUN Test normal range

ParameterTypical reference range
BUN (adults)7–20 mg/dL
BUN : Creatinine ratio10:1 to 20:1

BUN is not the same as "blood urea". Blood urea ≈ BUN × 2.14. Ranges are typical adult values and vary between labs, age and sex. Always use the range printed on your report and discuss results with your doctor.

Understanding your results

  • High BUN can be caused by kidney disease, dehydration, a high-protein diet or bleeding in the stomach.
  • Low BUN is less common and may be seen with liver disease or low protein intake.
