Anaemia & low haemoglobin tests
Anaemia affects more than half of Indian women and a large share of children and men. It causes tiredness, breathlessness and poor concentration. Finding the cause — iron, vitamin B12 or something else — is the key to fixing it.
- Tiredness and weakness
- Breathlessness on climbing stairs
- Pale skin or nails
Quick answer
Start with a CBC to check haemoglobin. If it is low, Iron Studies and a Vitamin B12 test show whether iron or B12 deficiency is the cause. Normal haemoglobin is about 13–17 g/dL in men and 12–15 g/dL in women.
When should you get tested?
- Tiredness and weakness
- Breathlessness on climbing stairs
- Pale skin or nails
- Hair fall
- Heavy periods
Good to know
- Women with heavy periods and pregnant women should check haemoglobin regularly.
- Vegetarians are at higher risk of B12 deficiency anaemia.
- Take iron tablets only after confirming iron deficiency.
