What is the Uric Acid Test?
The Serum Uric Acid test measures uric acid, a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines found in foods like red meat, organ meat, seafood and alcohol. The kidneys remove most uric acid through urine.
High uric acid (hyperuricaemia) can form crystals in joints, causing gout — sudden, severe joint pain, often in the big toe — and can lead to kidney stones.
What it measures: The amount of uric acid in your blood.
Parameters included (1)

Why is this test done?
- Diagnosing and monitoring gout
- Evaluating joint pain and swelling
- Checking people with kidney stones
- Monitoring people with obesity, diabetes, high BP or high alcohol intake

Uric Acid Test normal range

Ranges are typical adult values and vary between labs, age and sex. Always use the range printed on your report and discuss results with your doctor.
Understanding your results
- Not everyone with high uric acid develops gout, but the risk rises the higher it goes.
- Weight loss, limiting alcohol and sugary drinks and staying hydrated help lower uric acid.
